Canada’s Wildfires Forces Thousands to Evacuate

Canadian authorities evacuated thousands of people due to the outbreak of the first major wildfire this season, which continues spreading in the west of the country. Authorities indicated that the fire is currently raging in approximately 2,500 hectares. About 3,500 people had to be evacuated. Mayor of Fort Nelson Rob Fraser said that moderate weather conditions helped slow the progress of the fire, but the return of winds could make the situation worse. "We are in a level five drought, which makes fighting wildfires very difficult, but we will do our best to contain these fires", Fraser added. In 2023, Canada witnessed the worst wildfire season in its history. The fires that swept the country from east to west destroyed more than 15 million hectares, claimed the lives of eight firefighters, and prompted authorities to evacuate 230,000 people.
