Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Aboul Gheit condemned in the strongest terms the extensive Israeli raids and operations against Lebanon, which led to a large number of deaths and thousands of injuries. The Arab League Secretary-General emphasized that this dangerous escalation represents a blatant assault on Lebanese sovereignty and threatens to explode the regional situation in a way that will have painful consequences for all. Aboul Gheit was quoted as saying that the world, especially the major influential powers, must shoulder their responsibilities to stop this catastrophic slide towards regional war, which is being pushed by Israeli leaders for selfish goals and political ends, according to Jamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the League. Aboul Gheit called on the Security Council to exercise its role and assume its responsibilities towards the maintenance of international peace and security, stressing that action must be taken now to stop this Israeli escalation, as the trage dy of Gaza cannot be repeated in Lebanon.
