Arab League calls for int’l efforts to prevent fall of Sudan

The Arab League called on Wednesday for intensive regional and international efforts to find peace in Sudan and prevent the fall of the state and its institution in the war-torn country. This call came in the opening speech of the League's Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit to the consultative meeting to bolster peace efforts for Sudan held in Cairo. The 14-month war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support forces had led to the death of over 15,000 people and caused the displacement of millions and such alarming facts should bolster efforts to end the sorrowful situation, said Abul-Gheit. He added that massacres that occurred in Sudan required a firm stance on part of the region and the world to end this madness. He warned that the situation in Sudan should not continue, noting that it was high time to put an end to the fighting for the sake of Sudan and its people. On his part, Bahrain Foreign Minister Abdulatif Al-Zayyani proposal a "humanitarian truce" during the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, infor ming the warring parties that such step was in favor of the Sudanese people and the country. He encouraged the return into negotiation to find a solution via the outcomes of the Jeddah forum, the support of neighboring countries, and international pressure to end the war. The consultative meeting gathered the Arab League, the UN, the AU, The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the EU, Bahrain (current President of the League), Mauritania (current President of the AU), Djibouti (current President of IGAD), in addition to Sudan initiative states Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the US.
