Post: Algeria Takes Over UN Security Council Presidency

NEW YORK: Algeria has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), marking the beginning of its leadership role for the month of January 2025. This transition follows the conclusion of the United States' term as president of the council.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, is scheduled to address media representatives at a press conference in New York on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Bendjama will outline the Security Council's agenda and discuss key issues expected to be addressed during Algeria's presidency.

The UNSC is composed of 15 member states, including five permanent members with veto power: China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, there are ten non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms. The newly elected non-permanent members for this period include Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia. These nations will collaborate to address global security challenges and uphold international peace and security.
