King Abdullah II of Jordan highlighted on Thursday the painful and unprecedented reality facing the Arab region in light of the tragedy that the residents of the Gaza Strip are experiencing due to Israeli aggression and a heinous war that has put all international conventions and covenants to the test. During his speech at the 33rd regular session of the Arab League Council at the summit level, held in Manama, Bahrain, King Abdullah II stressed the necessity of stopping the Israeli war on Gaza, and for the world to bear its moral and humanitarian responsibility to end a conflict that has been going on for more than seven decades. He emphasized that the destruction that Gaza is witnessing today will have major consequences for generations that have lived through death and injustice, while the Strip will need several years to recover. He indicated that what Gaza was exposed to would not give the region and the world stability, but rather would bring more violence and conflict, considering that achieving secur ity and peace in the region requires intensifying efforts to support the Palestinian government to carry out its tasks and to support the Palestinian brethren in obtaining all their legitimate rights and establishment their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He said that while Jordan affirms its continuation, in cooperation with the brothers and international partners, in delivering aid to the people in Gaza, it stresses the necessity of continuing to support UNRWA to carry out its humanitarian role and to increase allocations to this basic and important organization. He urged for mobilizing international efforts to ensure that there is no separation between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, or the displacement of the Palestinian brethren, as well as stopping the escalation in the West Bank due to unilateral Israeli measures. Regarding Jerusalem, King Abdullah II affirmed Jordan's commitment to preserving the historical and legal status existing there, stressin g that Jordan will continue to protect and care for the Islamic and Christian holy sites in the Holy City, based on the Hashemite custodianship over them.
