Baghdad, Strong storms and heavy rains on the coasts of India and Bangladesh, today, Monday, led to the death of at least 16 persons and the loss of electricity to millions before the hurricane lost its intensity. The Indian Meteorological Department stated that the cyclone crossed coastal areas, including the port of Mongla in Bangladesh and the neighboring Sagar Islands in the state of West Bengal in India, at a speed of up to 135 kilometers per hour late last night and reached land at about nine o'clock in the evening (1530 GMT), which led to the death of six people, including three who were electrocuted and others who were injured by debris.' On the other hand, the head of Bangladesh's disaster management department stated that at least ten people died, without providing details. Officials with the Ministry of Energy in Bangladesh said that the country cut off electricity supply to many areas as a precaution to avoid accidents, while many coastal cities remained in darkness due to falling trees and dow ned power lines. The low-lying coastal areas of South Asia in Bangladesh and India have witnessed frequent storms in the past few years as climate change has raised sea surface temperatures, and this is the first cyclone this year in the region.
