WHO Reports Critical Shortage of Medical Supplies in Gaza

Gaza City: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a severe shortage of medical supplies in Gaza, highlighting a critical health crisis in the region. The majority of medical equipment supplies have depleted, with stock zero levels reported for nearly 64% of medical equipment and 43% of essential medicines, including 42% of vaccines.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Hanan Balkhy, WHO's Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, provided these alarming details during a press briefing in Geneva. She emphasized the dire situation, noting the significant lack of basic medications such as antibiotics, pain killers, and drugs for chronic diseases. "We are at stock zero," Balkhy stated, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The WHO currently has 51 aid trucks stationed at the Gaza border, awaiting clearance to deliver much-needed medical supplies. The delay in clearance has exacerbated the situation, leaving healthcare providers in a challenging position. Balkhy illustrated the challenges faced by medical professionals, questioning how surgeons could perform procedures without essential supplies like anaesthesia, IV fluids, needles, and bandages, which are not available in the required quantities.

The ongoing shortage poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of the population in Gaza, as the healthcare system struggles to cope with the increasing demand for medical care amidst these constraints.
