Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the massacre committed by the Israeli occupation army at a school sheltering displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip as a humanitarian tragedy and a political catastrophe. His remarks came during his speech on Monday at the European Forum organized by West German Broadcasting (WDR).
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Merz stated that the Israeli military operation has gone far beyond acceptable limits and that its objective is no longer clear, emphasizing that the suffering of the civilian population cannot be justified. He highlighted that, given Germany's historical responsibility, the country has traditionally exercised caution in publicly advising Israel. However, he stressed that when red lines are crossed and international humanitarian law is violated, it becomes Germany's duty and his responsibility as Chancellor to speak out.
Merz added that he has expressed his concerns with greater clarity in recent days. He reaffirmed that the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine remains the correct path for long-term peace in the region.
