Gaza city: UNRWA chief warned on Monday of 'record highs' diseases in the genocide-stricken Gaza Strip. 'Amid more than two years of war in the Gaza Strip, children repeatedly missed out on the vaccines that they need to keep them safe from preventable diseases,' UNRWA Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, posted on X.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Lazzarini highlighted the challenges faced by the Gaza Strip due to harsh winter weather conditions, which include cold, heavy rainfall, and floods. These conditions exacerbate the disease risks, which are already at record highs because of inadequate water and sanitation in overcrowded shelters and the collapse of the medical system.
Lazzarini further noted that UNRWA, in collaboration with UNICEF, WHO, local partners, and UNRWA teams, has initiated the second round of a vaccination campaign targeting children under the age of three. This effort aims to mitigate the health crisis by ensuring that young children receive the necessary vaccines that have been missed due to the ongoing conflict.
He emphasized that 'UNRWA works to save lives in Gaza,' stressing the organization's commitment to addressing the dire health conditions exacerbated by the ongoing challenges in the region.
