United States Withdraws from UNESCO Over Policy Differences

Washington: The United States has officially notified Director-General Audrey Azoulay of its decision to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The move marks a significant shift in the U.S. approach to international collaboration and reflects a reassessment of national interests.

According to EMM, the decision stems from the U.S. perspective that continued involvement in UNESCO does not align with its national priorities. The organization’s focus on advancing social and cultural initiatives, alongside its emphasis on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, is seen as conflicting with the U.S.'s "America First" foreign policy. Furthermore, UNESCO's decision to admit the State of Palestine as a member state has been a point of contention, as it challenges U.S. policy and is perceived to contribute to anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization.

Moving forward, the United States aims to direct its participation in international bodies towards efforts that unequivocally serve American interests. This withdrawal underscores the administration's commitment to engaging with global institutions in ways that prioritize national priorities and strategic objectives.
