NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council is set to vote today on a drafted resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire the Gaza Strip. The resolution, prepared by several non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, will be voted on this evening. Last Friday, Russia and China used their veto on a US-drafted resolution in the UN Security Council regarding Gaza, which did not include any direct call for a ceasefire, but rather indicated its support for the ongoing international efforts to secure a ceasefire. Since the start of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza last October 7th, Washington has used its veto power against three draft resolutions, two of which called for an immediate ceasefire. The resolution requires approval by at least nine votes and no veto from any of the five permanent member states - the United States, France, Britain, Russia, and China. The death toll in the Gaza Strip since October 7th has risen to around 32,226 reported fatalities, with 74,518 wounded, mostly children and wo men.
