UN Official Reports Severe Hunger Crisis in Gaza, Calls for Immediate Aid and Ceasefire

Gaza: Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher stated on Monday that one in three people in Gaza has not eaten for several days, urging immediate aid delivery and the establishment of a permanent ceasefire.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Fletcher issued a statement highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that Gaza is facing a severe crisis, with individuals seeking food aid being targeted, and children suffering from extreme hunger. Fletcher underscored the necessity for aid convoys to receive swift border-crossing permissions and condemned the attacks on those trying to access food aid.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, exacerbated by a severe famine and ongoing conflict. Since March 2, 2025, Israel has shut down all crossings with the Strip, severely limiting the entry of food and medical supplies, thus worsening the famine.

Recent data reveals that since October 7, 2023, 134 Palestinians, including 88 children, have succumbed to famine and malnutrition. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported a doubling in malnutrition rates among children under five between March and June due to the blockade. Furthermore, the World Health Organization highlighted alarming malnutrition levels in Gaza, with the blockade and aid delays leading to significant loss of life. Nearly 20% of children under five in Gaza City suffer from acute malnutrition.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have launched attacks on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of 59,821 citizens, predominantly women and children, and injuring 144,851 others. Many victims remain unaccounted for under the rubble and in inaccessible areas due to ongoing hostilities.
