UN Guterres: Gaza Crisis Reaching ‘Horrific Proportions,’ Urges Immediate Ceasefire

Ramallah: UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, warning that the humanitarian crisis has reached 'horrific proportions' and urging the international community not to allow the suffering of Palestinians to be overshadowed by other conflicts in the region.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Guterres spoke to reporters ahead of his departure to Spain for the International Conference on Financing for Development. He emphasized Israel's legal obligations, stating, "Let me be clear: Israel, as the occupying Power, is required to agree to and facilitate humanitarian relief."

Guterres highlighted the dire situation, noting that people are being killed simply trying to feed themselves and their families. He remarked, "The search for food must never be a death sentence." He also pointed out the constraints on humanitarian operations, mentioning that for over three months, essential materials and fuel for critical services have been blocked, leaving doctors to make impossible choices and aid workers without food.

The UN chief called on all Member States to uphold the UN Charter, which they recently recommitted to for its 80th anniversary. He urged them to ensure the delivery of life-saving supplies and reach people in need. Guterres reiterated that the ultimate solution to the crisis is political, emphasizing the importance of a negotiated political solution for lasting peace in the region.

Guterres concluded by advocating for the Two-State solution as the sustainable path to re-establishing hope. He stressed that diplomacy and human dignity must prevail to achieve this outcome.
