Post: UN General Assembly Votes for Israeli Withdrawal from Occupied Palestinian Territories

New york: The United Nations General Assembly has passed a pivotal resolution demanding Israel's withdrawal from territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. This resolution underscores the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, while also seeking a just resolution to the Palestinian refugee issue in line with UN resolution 194 from December 1948.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the resolution saw overwhelming support, with 151 countries voting in favor, while 11 opposed, and another 11 abstained from the vote. The proposal was introduced during the 80th session of the General Assembly by Palestine, Jordan, Djibouti, Senegal, Qatar, and Mauritania under agenda item 35.

The resolution highlights the United Nations' ongoing responsibility regarding the Palestinian question until a comprehensive settlement is achieved per international law and relevant resolutions. It stresses that resolving the core Arab-Israeli conflict is crucial for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

The resolution reaffirms the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force and calls for respect for the unity and territorial integrity of all occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. It further asserts that Israel, as the occupying power, must not obstruct the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state alongside Israel in peace and security.

The resolution demands the cessation of Israeli settlement activities and any unilateral actions altering the demographic or legal status of Jerusalem and other occupied territories. It condemns the use of force against Palestinian civilians, particularly children, and emphasizes adherence to international law to protect civilian lives and reduce regional tensions.

The Assembly also commended the Palestinian government's efforts to build and maintain institutions with international support despite the challenges of occupation. It highlighted the importance of fostering Palestinian reconciliation and the development of institutions for an independent Palestinian state.
