New York: A group of independent human rights experts on Wednesday called upon the UN Security Council to urgently address what they describe as Israel's extreme actions against civilians in Gaza, particularly focusing on the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the experts emphasized the need for an in-depth discussion during the Council's open debate on the protection of civilians, chaired by Greece. They highlighted the severe gender-specific impacts of the ongoing violence on women and girls in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The experts pointed out that the assaults have disrupted every facet of civilian life, with Palestinian women and girls suffering greatly. They noted that more than 28,000 women and girls have lost their lives, thousands have been injured, and nearly a million people have been displaced. Critical humanitarian access continues to be obstructed by Israeli actions.
The experts further reported that approximately 13,000 women are now the sole providers for their families, and the entire population faces the threat of famine. Urgent medical treatment will be required for nearly 71,000 children and 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women due to severe malnutrition.
They stressed that women face significant challenges while caring for their families, with limited access to basic necessities. Women and girls with disabilities are experiencing heightened risks, including neglect and barriers to essential services.
The experts argued that the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the suffering of women and girls necessitate immediate action by the Security Council. They contended that the devastation is a result of deliberate Israeli policies aimed at causing physical destruction of the Palestinian people.
Despite the military assault, Palestinian women continue to play vital roles as caregivers, journalists, medical workers, and educators. They persist in their efforts even amid tremendous losses, with children striving to continue their education under dire circumstances.
The experts reiterated the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire and accountability measures, urging the Council to address the specific gender-related impacts of the crisis. They warned that the basic protection of civilians in Gaza has been flagrantly violated and stressed the importance of upholding international law to maintain its significance.
