UK Prime Minister Announces Potential Recognition of State of Palestine

London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the United Kingdom is prepared to recognize the State of Palestine in September at the United Nations General Assembly unless Israel makes significant efforts towards peace, particularly in addressing the situation in Gaza.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Starmer emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire, calling for the United Nations to continuously provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza to prevent starvation and demanding the release of hostages. He expressed support for the efforts of the US, Qatari, and Egyptian governments in seeking a ceasefire.

Starmer outlined the necessity of a comprehensive plan to achieve a long-term settlement and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. He highlighted that this plan should include the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the removal of Hamas leadership from Gaza, which are critical steps toward a negotiated two-state solution.

The British Prime Minister acknowledged the steps announced by President Mahmoud Abbas, suggesting these should serve as a foundation for the reform of the Palestinian Authority. He reiterated Britain's longstanding commitment to recognizing Palestinian statehood as an inalienable right and integral to Israel's long-term security.

Starmer stated that Britain would recognize the State of Palestine unless Israel takes substantive actions to ameliorate the conditions in Gaza and commits to sustainable peace. This includes allowing the UN to resume humanitarian support, agreeing to a ceasefire, and halting annexations in the West Bank. He clarified that recognition will not be subject to any party's actions or inactions.

He also announced immediate measures to address the humanitarian crisis, such as collaborating with Jordan on air drops of supplies and transferring injured children from Gaza to British hospitals. Starmer emphasized the importance of governance and security reforms in Gaza and the necessity for long-term political negotiations and a two-state solution.
