Thousands Protest Outside French Embassy in Niger, Paris Vows Retaliation if Nationals Attacked

Thousands of supporters of the Nigerien army that toppled elected president Mohamed Bazoum staged a protest outside French embassy in the capital Niamey, on Sunday.

The protesters chanted slogans against France and threatened to storm the embassy building. They removed a plaque bearing the words Embassy of France in Niger.

The French presidency said in a statement that it would respond immediately and decisively against any attack that targets its nationals or interests in the west African nation.

This comes after Paris, a Niger ally who deploys 1500 soldiers in the country, said Saturday it would suspend aid to Niamey over the toppling of Bazoum.

These demonstrations come after the Nigerien military council issued a statement on Saturday, calling on citizens to take to the streets in protest against the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and to show support for the military leaders.
