The emergency session of the UN Security Council began on Wednesday evening to discuss developments following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations said: "The international community must work to stop the expansion of the conflict and that the recent attacks constitute a dangerous escalation in the Middle East." While the Chinese delegate said: "The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh is a clear attempt to sabotage efforts to achieve peace." Algerian delegate called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the Zionist occupation of all lands, stressing that the international community cannot remain silent in the face of this amount of bloodshed and contempt for international law." He added: "The occupation is targeting civilians in Gaza and violating sovereignty in Syria and Lebanon. What it is doing is a blatant aggression and not legitimate self-defense."
