Stockholm: The Swedish Left Party on Monday launched a symbolic initiative in the parliament with the participation of all 22 of its members and two Left members of the European Parliament. The action is aimed at highlighting the plight of Palestinian detainees and advancing their cause within European legislative bodies.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the MPs displayed photos of 24 Palestinian detainees, including leader Marwan Barghouti, on their parliamentary seats for a two-week duration. They are also sharing information on social media about the detention conditions, with the objective of increasing European awareness of this humanitarian issue.
In a further display of solidarity, each MP wrote a personal message to a detainee. These messages were delivered through the International Committee of the Red Cross and the lawyer of the Detainees' and Ex-Detainees' Affairs Commission. The initiative saw active participation from party leaders, including Nooshi Dadgostar, who emphasized the party's commitment to supporting Palestinian rights, especially the rights of detainees to freedom and human dignity.
This initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the Swedish Left Party, the General Union of the Palestinian Community in Sweden, the Commission of Detainees' and Ex-Detainees' Affairs, and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS). The effort aims to internationalize the issue of detainees and raise its profile on the global stage.
The union and the Palestinian community have expressed gratitude for the supportive actions of Swedish and European parliamentarians, reaffirming their dedication to continue their efforts until the detainees achieve full freedom.
