Qatari PM Announces Gaza Ceasefire Agreement Reached

Doha: Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani announced on Wednesday that a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip has been reached. This announcement was made during a press conference held in Doha, signaling a potential halt to the ongoing conflict in the region.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, the ceasefire agreement comprises three phases and is scheduled to come into effect on Sunday. The agreement is aimed at ending Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has been described as genocidal aggression by various observers.

The conflict in Gaza has seen Israel continue its military actions despite a legally binding decision from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered a halt to the offensive in Rafah. This decision was based on concerns that the actions might violate Israel’s obligations under the Genocide Convention.

The ongoing conflict since October 7 has resulted in at least 46,707 Palestinian deaths and 110,265 injuries. Additionally, around 10,000 people are unaccounted for, believed to be trapped under the rubble of destroyed homes across the region. Reports from Palestinian and international organizations indicate that a significant number of the casualties are women and children.

The situation has led to the displacement of nearly two million people from various parts of the Gaza Strip. Most of the displaced population has been forced into the southern city of Rafah, near the Egyptian border, marking the largest mass displacement since the 1948 Nakba.
