Vienna, The State of Qatar has expressed its appreciation and gratitude for the officials in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, foremost among them the Executive Director of UNODC, Ghada Waly, for their profound role and support in establishing the UN regional center for combating cybercrime in Doha and maintaining its successful operation. This came in the State of Qatar's speech delivered by HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Austria and the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi, before a side event on the UNODC regional center for combating cybercrime in Doha, held on the margins of the 33rd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, currently convened in Vienna. HE the Ambassador of the State of Qatar highlighted that the establishment of the center in Doha comes as part of the Qatar-backed efforts to support multilateralism and international organizations to he lp the developing countries, citing the UN House in Doha that comprises 12 UN offices, including the center. The center aims to assist the developing countries in the region and beyond to counter the challenge of cybercrimes through training and capacity-building, especially since these countries are disproportionately susceptible to the direct and indirect impacts of cybercrimes, precipitating the capacity-building as a foremost priority, His Excellency said. He pointed out that the center is assigned with another mission dedicated to encouraging coordination and cooperation among nations to counter the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes. His Excellency hoped success for the resumed closing session of the Ad Hoc Committee to Elaborate a Comprehensive International Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications Technologies for Criminal Purposes, culminating in adopting a convention in this regard and enforcing the international cooperation.
