Prime Minister Launches Water Project in Jenin Funded by World Bank and Germany

Jenin: Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa laid the foundation stone for a significant water project in the Jenin Governorate, marking the commencement of a wholesale water system improvement project and the construction of water distribution networks for villages northeast of Jenin. The ceremony saw the presence of notable figures including Jenin Governor Kamal Abu Al-Rub, Head of the Palestinian Water Authority Ziad Al-Mimi, World Bank Regional Director Stefan Emblad, Mayor of Marj Ibn Amer Barakat Al-Omari, alongside several ministers, officials, and local citizens.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the project represents one of the largest strategic interventions in Jenin's water sector. Its goals include transforming the water supply system, enhancing water security, and strengthening the community's resilience. The Water Security and Resilience Program, which funds the project, is supported by the World Bank in partnership with the German government through the German Development Bank (KfW). The total budget for this initiative is $55.5 million, with $41 million contributed by the World Bank and $14.5 million from KfW.

The international partnership highlights a growing confidence in the Palestinian government's vision and paves the way for new phases of water justice and sustainable development in the region. Prime Minister Mustafa emphasized the resilience and determination of the Palestinian people to build and achieve, even amidst political challenges. He reiterated the people's strong ties to their land and identity despite ongoing adversities.

Mustafa also stressed that relief efforts must go beyond Jenin and Gaza, with the government committed to advancing construction and development across various governorates. Upcoming projects are expected to significantly improve living standards for Palestinians throughout the region.

The Prime Minister mentioned that preparations are underway for projects aimed at reconstructing refugee camps in the northern occupied West Bank. These reconstruction efforts will begin with international support once the occupation and aggression against these camps cease.

Head of the Palestinian Water Authority, Ziad Al-Mimi, confirmed the project's implementation in partnership with the World Bank under the Water Security and Resilience Program, with funding of approximately $51 million. The project is projected to increase water availability by around seven million cubic meters annually, benefiting over 124,000 citizens in Jenin, Qabatiya, Burqin, and neighboring villages, while ensuring equitable distribution and enhanced water service quality.

World Bank's Regional Director emphasized that investing in this project aligns with the Bank's commitment to supporting essential infrastructure in Palestine. Water security, he noted, is fundamental to economic and social stability and is vital for sustainable development.
