Ramallah: President Mahmoud Abbas today welcomed the announcement by the Portuguese government that it has begun the process of recognizing the State of Palestine, with official recognition expected in September. President Abbas described the move as a positive and courageous step that supports the path toward implementing the two-state solution and achieving peace based on international legitimacy and international law.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas expressed appreciation for Portugal's decision, highlighting it as a bold and constructive step by a friendly government. He emphasized that this move reinforces the path of the two-state solution and affirms the international community's consensus on the necessity of ending the suffering endured by the Palestinian people.
The President reiterated the importance of this recognition and called on other countries that have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to undertake similar actions in support of peace. He underscored the significance of such steps in backing the peace process and contributing to the resolution of longstanding issues.
President Abbas also reaffirmed Palestine's commitment to the pledges made during the high-level international conference on a peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and the implementation of the two-state solution. This conference was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 28 to 30, 2025, reflecting Palestine's ongoing dedication to achieving a peaceful solution.
