London: President Mahmoud Abbas met on Tuesday at his residence in London with Sir Edward Davey, the leader of the British Liberal Democrat Party. The meeting focused on the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and the bilateral relations between the State of Palestine and the United Kingdom.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, President Abbas expressed his gratitude for the UK's efforts, particularly highlighting Britain's initiatives to achieve a permanent ceasefire, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, oppose settlement activity and settler violence, and work towards a two-state solution.
President Abbas commended the United Kingdom's historic decision to recognize the State of Palestine in anticipation of the international peace conference in New York later this month. He described this decision as a step toward correcting historical injustices and opening new opportunities for peace.
The President underscored current Palestinian priorities, which include an immediate and permanent ceasefire, ensuring full access for humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of hostages and prisoners, the withdrawal of occupation forces, and the initiation of early recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Reiterating the significance of the Gaza Strip, President Abbas stated that it remains an integral part of the State of Palestine, asserting that the state will fulfill its responsibilities there with the backing of Arab and international support.
