Ramallah: The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization convened at its headquarters in Ramallah, chaired by Deputy President Hussein al-Sheikh. The meeting focused on the latest political and field developments, including efforts to halt Israeli aggression in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Discussions also revolved around strategies to end the Israeli occupation and achieve Palestinian independence with East Jerusalem as its capital, in alignment with international resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, the Executive Committee expressed full support for President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership's efforts to garner Arab, regional, and international backing. The aim is to protect Palestinian national rights, consolidate the ceasefire, allow humanitarian aid, and facilitate reconstruction. The Committee emphasized stopping displacement, settlement expansion, and settler violence while ensuring the release of withheld funds. The preservation of Islamic and Christian holy sites' historical and legal status was also highlighted as a priority.
The Committee congratulated the Palestinian National Liberation Movement "Fatah" on the success of its Eighth General Conference and extended well-wishes to the newly elected Central Committee and Revolutionary Council members. It noted the commitment to democracy demonstrated through recent electoral successes, including the Shabiba elections, local bodies elections, and "Fatah" Movement elections.
The Executive Committee also addressed preparations for the Palestinian National Council elections scheduled for November, as well as general elections. This includes completing the adoption of necessary laws through comprehensive national dialogue and a public referendum, setting the stage for parliamentary elections and enhancing democratic legitimacy.
Gratitude was extended to Egypt and Lebanon for their support in facilitating the "Fatah" Movement elections, reflecting strong historical relations with the Palestinian people.
Economically, the Committee discussed the challenging financial conditions due to Israel's economic siege and fund withholding. It highlighted the need for a national economic dialogue involving various sectors to address these challenges and sustain social stability.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment to national unity, ending the occupation, and establishing an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem, ensuring the sovereignty of Palestinian national decision-making.
