Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah hold protest against high sentences Israeli prosecutor wants imposed on detainees
Dozens of Palestinian residents of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah today organized a protest in front of the Israeli District Court in Jerusalem against the high sentences demanded by the Israeli prosecutor against detainees who stood up for Israeli settlers who attacked their homes and property in May of last year.
The protesters, whose sons were detained and put on trial, raised banners denouncing the unjust sentences demanded by the Israeli prosecution against their sons.
One resident said her son, Bilal Jabari, 19, was detained a year ago for standing up to the settlers who attacked their homes in Sheikh Jarrah and is facing a possible eight-year sentence requested by the prosecutor.
The Israeli courts recently passed similar high sentences against Palestinians in Israel who also stood up to Israeli extremists after attacking their homes and neighborhoods in mixed Arab-Jewish towns in Israel in May of last year while Israelis involved in the attacks were acquitted.
