Palestinian Detainees Endure Severe Conditions in Israeli Shatta Prison

Ramallah: The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission has raised serious concerns over the harsh conditions faced by Palestinian detainees in Israeli custody, specifically in Shatta prison, where detainees are reportedly subjected to severe beatings and continuous gas spraying.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the Commission highlighted that the food provided to detainees is raw and lacks salt. The Commission has also cited reports from sick detainees indicating that the prison administration practices medical negligence, particularly towards those with health issues.

The statement from the Commission mentioned the case of detainee Walid Muslim, who has been held since September 2024. Muslim has developed psoriasis during his detention, and his condition is worsening due to the absence of medical treatment. Detainee Fadi Raddad also suffers from severe pain in his right shoulder and back following an assault by prison guards, compounded by the administration's neglect in providing necessary medical care.

Following a visit by a lawyer, detainees have called on relevant authorities to ensure the provision of clocks in the prison and information on fasting times and the call to prayer, especially with the upcoming month of Ramadan. They have also requested additional copies of the Qur'an, as there is currently only one available per room.

The detainees have appealed to institutions to assist them in enabling the practice of religious rituals during Ramadan and to improve the quality of the food provided to them.
