Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Mansour on Tuesday sent three identical letters to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN Security Council for this month (Switzerland), and the President of the UN General Assembly, on the passing of a full year of the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people. Ambassador Mansour referred in his letters to the shocking collective punishment, which violates all legal, humanitarian and moral standards, through the Israeli occupation forces targeting civilian areas throughout the Gaza Strip indiscriminately, killing children, women and men, and destroying all the basic elements of human survival and dignity. He noted that despite repeated calls for a ceasefire, Israel, the occupying power, continues to flagrantly violate the UN Charter and all principles of international law, including humanitarian law and human rights law, relevant UN resolutions, and the interim measures ordered by the International Co urt of Justice (ICJ) in the case of South Africa v. Israel, while the Security Council has not yet taken any action to impose an immediate ceasefire or to hold accountable the brutality being inflicted on the Palestinian people. He stressed that the outcome of this is disastrous for the Palestinian people, for the international legal system, for the credibility and authority of the Security Council, and for the prospects for reaching a just and peaceful solution to this grave historical injustice. He also called for an independent international investigation and accountability for all crimes committed by the Israeli entity in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, through the judicial bodies of the United Nations, including the issuance by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of arrest warrants against the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Occupation Army. Mansour also stressed the need for the Security Council to demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire, implement the Coun cil's resolutions, especially Resolution 2735, provide protection for Palestinian civilians, and take measures, including sanctions, in the face of Israel's continued defiance and refusal to comply with the binding interim measures orders issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
