New attack on the Kor’an by an “Iranian” in Stockholm

A woman of Iranian descent burned yesterday, Thursday (August 3, 2023)a copy of the Holy Qur’an in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, under police guard.

Perami, 47, carried out the assault and burning of the Qur’an on Angbybadet Beach in Bromma, Stockholm.

Recently, in Sweden and Denmark, incidents of insulting the Qur’an by extremists in front of the Embassies of Islamic countries have been repeated, which sparked angry Arab and Islamic reactions, officially and popularly, in contrast to official summons for the diplomats of the two countries in more than one Arab country.

The latest attack comes two days after the statements of the Swedish government, in which it said that the recent incidents of burning the Holy Qur’an have increased the threats facing the country, noting that the authorities have strengthened border controls, giving the police broader authority to intercept and search individuals.

A new law, which entered into force at the beginning of this August, grants the police broad powers to conduct searches at and around the country’s borders, including physical searches and enhanced electronic monitoring.

For his part, Swedish Minister of Justice Gunnar Stromer said in a press conference: “The border controls are a measure that allows us to identify those coming to Sweden who may pose a threat to security.”

In a related context, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christensen confirmed, on Tuesday, that the country’s government is considering making changes that might allow the police to stop public burning of the Qur’an if that poses a threat to national security.

Christensen described the situation as “dangerous and complex” and “exploited by those looking to harm Sweden”, including Russia, which is likely to exploit the situation to its advantage.

Last July 26, the United Nations adopted a consensus resolution, drafted by Morocco, condemning all acts of violence against the holy books, as a violation of international law.
