Minister of Youth and Sports, Ahmed Al-Mubarqa', confirmed: 'Iraq hosts sporting events that befit its and its civilizational and cultural depth.' Al-Mubarqa said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the West Asian Athletics Championships: 'Basra is on a new date with the Bride of the Games, after the Gulf wedding that it hosted last year.' He added: 'The Ministry has made a pledge to be an incubator for all sporting events and tournaments, and for various games without exception.' The opening ceremony, which took place at Basra Sports City Stadium, was sponsored by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, and was attended by Advisor to the Prime Minister for Sports, Iyad Bunyan, Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, President of the West Asian Athletics Federation, Sayyar Al-Anzi, and a number of other government officials and athletes.
