Mamdani Calls Trump’s Deportation Threat an Attack on US Democracy, Vows Not to Give In

New York: The new Democratic nominee for mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has denounced US President Donald Trump's threat to arrest and deport him. Mamdani described the statement as an attack on democracy and vowed not to accept this intimidation.

According to TRTworld.com, Mamdani expressed his concerns on X, stating that the President threatened to have him arrested, stripped of his citizenship, put in a detention camp, and deported. Mamdani emphasized that this threat was not due to any legal wrongdoing but was a result of his refusal to allow ICE agents to terrorize New York City. He highlighted the broader implications of the President's statements as a warning to all New Yorkers who choose to speak up.

Mamdani underscored his resolve by stating, "Rest assured, I hold all the levers, and have all the cards." This comes after Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from New York City unless Mamdani complies with what Trump considers the "right thing" as mayor. Trump proclaimed his intentions to "save" the city, drawing parallels to his claims of saving the "Good Ol USA."

Trump has a history of calling for the arrest and jailing of political opponents, including figures like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and California Governor Gavin Newsom, often without clarifying the charges. The Trump administration's crackdown on immigrants has targeted irregular migrants and aimed to strip naturalized citizens of their status for alleged criminal offenses.

Mamdani recently emerged victorious over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, a result confirmed after rank-choice votes were counted. This positions Mamdani to become New York City's first Muslim mayor. Despite New York's Democratic leanings, Mamdani could face challenges from independent candidates like Cuomo or current Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking reelection.

New Yorkers are set to elect their mayor on November 4. Mamdani, known for his support of Palestine and criticism of Israel, co-founded a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine during his college years. In 2023, he participated in a hunger strike outside the White House, advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza.
