Post: League of Arab States Criticizes Colombia’s Embassy Opening in Jerusalem

Jerusalem:The League of Arab States has condemned Colombia's decision to officially open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, describing it as a violation of relevant UN resolutions.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, the League's General Secretariat stated that this move disregards the legal and political status of East Jerusalem, considered part of the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967 and the capital of the State of Palestine. The League warned of serious repercussions, highlighting that the decision contradicts international consensus and undermines the Palestinian people's legitimate national rights.

The League emphasized that Jerusalem's legal status cannot be altered through unilateral measures or diplomatic actions that contravene international law. It referenced UN Security Council Resolution 478 (1980), which declared Israeli measures altering the character and status of Jerusalem null and void, and Resolution 2334 (2016), which stated that the UNSC would not recognize changes to the 1967 lines without mutual agreement.

Furthermore, the League affirmed that international resolutions, including those from the United Nations General Assembly, are binding for addressing Jerusalem's status. It warned that unilateral measures could undermine peace efforts and reduce the chances of achieving a two-state solution. The statement reiterated that East Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Palestine and emphasized the need for an independent Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders.

The League of Arab States urged Colombia to reconsider its decision, abide by the principles of the UN Charter and resolutions, and respect international law, stressing that respecting Jerusalem's legal status is a global responsibility and that unilateral actions do not promote peace or stability.
