Israel’s Displacement Order in Gaza Deemed Unlawful by Amnesty International

Gaza city: Israel's recent mass displacement order for Gaza City residents has been labeled as unlawful and inhumane by Amnesty International. The organization has called for the immediate reversal of the order, issued on September 9, which demands the relocation of civilians amidst escalating military actions.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Amnesty International has highlighted the severe impact of the order on the residents of Gaza City, who have been enduring continuous bombardment and harsh living conditions. The military directive, described as cruel by Heba Morayef, Amnesty International's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, exacerbates the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

For nearly two years, Gaza City residents have faced relentless attacks and have been forced into overcrowded camps or buildings. This recent order is seen as a repetition of the mass displacement directive issued for North Gaza in October 2023. Amnesty International asserts that such forced displacements contravene international humanitarian law, constituting war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Testimonies collected by Amnesty International paint a grim picture. Residents are struggling to flee due to prohibitive transportation costs, and the designated evacuation areas are inadequate for habitation. Healthcare workers and displaced individuals share harrowing accounts of their struggles. A healthcare worker expressed the dilemma of choosing between bombardment and displacement, while a woman with disabilities recounted the difficulties in securing transportation and basic necessities.

The situation is further exacerbated by the destruction of high-rise buildings, which have served as shelters for many families. Amnesty International accuses Israel of inflicting conditions that aim to physically devastate the population and criticizes the international community's failure to intervene decisively.

Heba Morayef emphasized the historical and cultural significance of Gaza City, now under threat of complete destruction. Amnesty International's statement calls for an immediate halt to Israel's actions and urges states with influence to cease providing arms and support, warning of potential complicity in genocide.

The organization stresses the urgent need for humanitarian access and protection for Gaza's civilians, urging countries and companies to reconsider their roles in the ongoing conflict.
