Iran’s Assembly of Experts Appoints New Supreme Leader Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran: Iran's Assembly of Experts has selected a new supreme leader to succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli airstrike, a senior Iranian cleric said Sunday. This marks a significant transition in Iran's leadership during a period of heightened regional tensions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ahmad Alamolhoda affirmed that all claims suggesting indecision within the Assembly of Experts are unfounded. Alamolhoda confirmed that the leadership vote had been conducted and a successor chosen, though the name of the new supreme leader has yet to be disclosed.

Under Iran's Constitution, Alamolhoda emphasized that the decision is irrevocable, and even members of the Assembly of Experts cannot alter their votes once cast. The official announcement of the new leader is pending and will be made by Ayatollah Hashem Hosseini Bushehri, who is tasked with communicating the assembly's decision.

The selection of a new supreme leader comes in the wake of significant casualties from recent US-Israeli attacks on Iran. Official data indicates that more than 1,200 people, including Khamenei and top military officials, have died, with over 10,000 others injured since February 28. In response, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military assets.
