India: Landslides kill 27, injure 50 others

The Indian authorities announced Sunday that the death toll from a landslide in Maharashtra in central western India rose to 27, while 50 people are still missing. According to France 24, the local official, Yogesh Mahasi, said, “We have counted 27 bodies so far, and between 50 and 60 people are still missing, but there are many problems in the rescue work at the site.” Mahasi said, “The small isolated village is about 5 kilometres from the nearest road, and no heavy equipment can reach this site, and we only have small machines. The bulk of the work is manual. The heavy rains that did not stop in the area made the rescue operation more difficult.” He added that he was not optimistic about the possibility of finding more survivors on the fourth day of the ongoing rescue operation. Local media reported that entire families had died.
