ICRC Completes Transfer of 15 Palestinian Bodies to Gaza

Gaza: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced the successful facilitation of transferring 15 Palestinian bodies to the Gaza Strip. This operation marked the conclusion of a lengthy process aimed at reuniting families and supporting the implementation of a ceasefire agreement.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the ICRC's efforts began in October 2023 and have since supported the return of 195 hostages, which included 35 deceased individuals, along with 3,472 detainees. Furthermore, the organization has facilitated the transfer of a total of 360 deceased Palestinians to Gaza. This initiative is part of a broader mission to uphold international humanitarian law and aid in the rebuilding of lives in Gaza.

Julien Lerisson, the head of the ICRC delegation in Israel and the Occupied Territories, emphasized the significance of maintaining the ceasefire agreement beyond the current phase. He highlighted the necessity for humanitarian assistance to be allowed into Gaza, stressing the importance of reopening the Rafah crossing to address immediate needs. Lerisson also pointed out the critical nature of allowing entry for specialized items needed for infrastructure rehabilitation and the dignified recovery and identification of human remains.

Despite improvements, the ICRC noted that humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain challenging. Many families continue to endure immense suffering, facing death and destruction. Thousands are still waiting for news on missing relatives, many of whom are believed to be trapped beneath rubble. Limited forensic capacities further complicate the identification of loved ones, presenting significant challenges for affected families.

Lerisson concluded by acknowledging the extensive work that remains and the necessity for collective efforts, as no single entity can manage the entirety of this task alone.
