Budapest: Citing a mandate from voters, Hungarian Prime Minister-elect Peter Magyar said on Tuesday that several senior state officials should step down by May 31 or face removal from office.
According to Anadolu Agency, Magyar, who won an overwhelming majority in the April 12 elections, announced on the US social media company X that officials loyal to Viktor Orban, who lost power after 16 years, should vacate their positions. He specifically mentioned the president, the heads of the country's highest judicial authority, the Curia, the National Office for the Judiciary, the Constitutional Court, and the Prosecutor General as targets of his demand.
Magyar emphasized that the call for resignations is rooted in the support for what he described as a 'complete political transformation' by voters on April 12. He warned that if these officials do not resign voluntarily by the deadline, they would be removed based on the mandate received from millions of Hungarians. However, he did not specify how these removals would be executed.
Magyar also mentioned his intent to be sworn in as Prime Minister on May 9 or 10, contingent upon the president's decision regarding the convening of parliament.
