The General Consumer Price Index (inflation) increased by 1.65 percent from the beginning of the year until the end of September, reaching 110.57 points, compared to 108.78 points during the same period last year, according to a report released by the Department of Statistics on Monday. The report highlights that significant contributors to the cumulative rise in the consumer price index included the personal luggage group, which surged by 10.52 percent; water and sanitation services, which increased by 7.34 percent; contributions to unions, which rose by 5.86 percent; rents, which grew by 3.89 percent; and vegetables, dried and canned legumes, which experienced a 3.76 percent rise. For September 2024, the general consumer price index reached 110.81 points, an increase from 109.70 points in September 2023, reflecting a monthly increase of 1.01 percent. Key contributors to this monthly increase included personal effects, which rose by 17.07 percent; water and sanitation services, up by 7.34 percent; tobacco and cigarettes, which saw a 6.70 percent increase; contributions to unions, rising by 5.86 percent; and culture and entertainment, which increased by 4.99 percent. However, this growth was tempered by decreases in clothing groups (down 4.59 percent), fruits and nuts (down 3.18 percent), dried and canned vegetables and legumes (down 3.00 percent), and furniture, carpets, and bedding (down 2.94 percent). The report also noted a slight decline in the consumer price index for September compared to the previous month, dropping from 111.17 points in August 2024 to 110.81 points. The decrease was primarily driven by reductions in the prices of vegetables, dried and canned legumes (down 5.10 percent), meat and poultry (down 4.03 percent), clothing (down 3.10 percent), fruits and nuts (down 2.58 percent), and transportation (down 0.98 percent).
