Brasilia: Brazil will request to intervene in South Africa's genocide case against Israel's actions in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, a source familiar with the matter said. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry announced that the country is in the "final stages" of submitting a formal intervention in South Africa's genocide case against Israel.
According to TRTworld.com, South Africa filed a case in 2023 asking the ICJ to declare that Israel was in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention concerning its actions against Palestinians in Gaza. The situation has raised significant international concerns, particularly regarding the humanitarian impact on the Palestinian population.
Reports indicate that approximately 11,000 Palestinians are feared buried under the rubble of destroyed homes, as per Palestine's official WAFA news agency. However, experts suggest that the real death toll could be much higher, potentially reaching around 200,000. Over the course of the conflict, Israel has reportedly devastated most of the enclave and displaced nearly its entire population.
In addition to the destruction, Israel has faced criticism for blocking the entry of essential humanitarian aid. It only permitted a controversial US-backed aid group to operate, which was established to bypass the United Nations' aid efforts and has been condemned as a "death trap."
