Australia Rejects Netanyahu’s Remarks Against Prime Minister

Sydney: Australia's Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke rejected the statements made by the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, against his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese. Australia's Home Affairs Minister told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that, "Strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many children you can leave hungry." According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Burke emphasized that strength is better measured by actions like those of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who directly communicated with Netanyahu about decisions that might not be favorable to Israel. Burke highlighted that Albanese had a direct conversation with Netanyahu, explaining Australia's intentions and allowing Netanyahu to voice his objections directly. Burke also commented on Netanyahu's reaction to several countries' announcements to recognize a Palestinian state, saying that Netanyahu "lashed out" at these nations. The tension between Australia and Israel es calated after Australia cancelled the visa of Simcha Rothman, a member of Israel's far-right Religious Zionism (Mafdal) party, just days before his planned visit to Australia for a speaking event. Alongside the cancellation, Rothman has been barred from entering Australia for the next three years. Burke stated, "Our government takes a hard line on people who seek to come to our country and spread division." In response to the visa cancellation, Israel decided to revoke the visas of Australia's representatives to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. The diplomatic friction follows Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's announcement on August 11 that Australia intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in the upcoming September.
