Cairo: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, affirmed on Monday that the Palestinian cause will remain at the forefront of the League's priorities. "We will continue to defend the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and work toward ending the occupation," he declared during his first press conference held at the General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Fahmy emphasized that "the city of Jerusalem will remain at the forefront of our focus in the face of every attempt to alter its status or erase its Arab identity." He condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank as ongoing crimes of genocide, calling for a steadfast Arab response proportional to the historical responsibility involved. Fahmy also advocated for the legal prosecution of those responsible, asserting that "genocide is not subject to a statute of limitations, and those who commit it today will stand before justice tomorrow."
The Secretary-General highlighted that Israeli aggressions extend beyond Palestinian territories to Lebanon, through continuous attacks and violations in Beirut and South Lebanon, which he described as blatant breaches of Lebanese sovereignty and international law. He also addressed the ongoing occupation of the Syrian Arab Golan, reiterating the League's rejection of any attempts to enforce a status quo by force.
Fahmy concluded by stating that the Arab region is at a critical juncture, necessitating more vigilant and proactive Arab actions aimed at protecting Arab interests and safeguarding the region's capabilities. He stressed that solutions to issues in the Arab world must arise from collective Arab will, as agreements reached by Arab nations are the only ones capable of achieving sustainability.
