Amnesty International Calls for Immediate End to Support for Israel Amidst Accusations of Genocide

Gaza: Amnesty International has called on states, companies, and both public and private institutions to immediately end their political, economic, and military support for Israel, which the organization says is enabling the continuation of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, as well as the illegal occupation and system of apartheid against all Palestinians.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Agn¨s Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, stated, "It is beyond time for states, public institutions, companies, universities and other private actors to end their lethal addiction to economic gains and profits at all costs." She emphasized that Israel's prolonged unlawful occupation and decades of apartheid are sustained through economic relations and trade, along with the continuous supply of weapons and surveillance equipment.

Amnesty's briefing coincides with the anniversary of the September 18, 2024, UN General Assembly resolution demanding Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territory within 12 months. This resolution followed a July 2024 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which deemed Israel's occupation of Palestinian land unlawful and its treatment of Palestinians as violations of international prohibitions on racial segregation and apartheid.

The organization contends that global political and economic systems have not only failed to hold Israel accountable but have actively supported or facilitated the conditions that sustain what Amnesty describes as crimes under international law.

In its briefing, Amnesty International called for a range of state-level actions to address corporate complicity in human rights violations. These include banning companies that contribute to or profit from Israel's violations of international law, introducing effective legislation and oversight mechanisms, halting purchases and public contracts linked to implicated firms, and implementing divestment strategies.

Amnesty International identified 15 companies it claims are complicit in Israel's ongoing violations. These companies operate in sectors such as defense, surveillance, infrastructure, and utilities. Among U.S. arms manufacturers, Boeing and Lockheed Martin were cited. Israeli defense firms named include Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). In the surveillance and technology sector, the briefing highlights China's Hikvision, the U.S.-based Palantir Technologies, and Israel's Corsight.

Other implicated firms include infrastructure and transport companies such as Spain's Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) and South Korea's HD Hyundai. Additionally, Israel's state-owned water company, Mekorot, was listed under the utilities sector.

The organization urged its global network of members and supporters to demand an immediate end to what it called the "political economy underpinning Israel's international crimes," emphasizing that "human dignity is not a commodity."
