Algerian Foreign Minister, Beninese Counterpart Discuss Niger Crisis

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, on Friday met with his Beninese counterpart Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, to discuss the developments of the crisis in Niger and the efforts for restoring the constitutional order to the country.

During the meeting, the two ministers affirmed Algeria and Benin’s adherence to the legal controls of the African Union aimed at addressing political crises through peaceful means and dialogue. They also exchanged views regarding the efforts made to find a political solution to the Nigerien crisis, and to avoid the option of military interference that threatens the security of the West African region.

A few days ago, Algeria announced that it had launched an initiative to find a political solution to the crisis in Niger that would spare this country and the West African region uncalculated consequences. Following that, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune assigned his foreign minister to visit Nigeria, Benin and Ghana, all of which are members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), for consultations to formulate a political solution that leads to the return of legitimacy in the country.
