51 Nations Urge IAEA Intervention in Gaza to Address Humanitarian Needs

Vienna: Fifty-one countries, including Turkey, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and China, have called upon the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide urgent and long-term support to the State of Palestine amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. This declaration was made during a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, articulated by Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Vienna, Levent Eler.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, the joint statement emphasized the potential role the IAEA could play in alleviating the crisis in Gaza. The countries welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement in the region, urging all involved parties to comply with and implement the terms of the agreement. The statement underscored serious concerns about the humanitarian conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory, focusing particularly on the situation in Gaza.

The statement highlighted the discrepancy between the humanitarian aid entering Gaza and the amounts agreed upon in the ceasefire agreement, noting that the supplies are "significantly less." It expressed a belief that the IAEA is well-positioned to provide necessary assistance to address the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

Furthermore, the statement appealed to the IAEA to support Palestine by addressing both immediate and long-term needs, specifically in areas such as nuclear medicine, non-destructive testing, and environmental assessments related to soil, air, and water pollution.
