Senator Bassam Talhouni, representing Senate President Faisal Fayez, Monday inaugurated the 11th Middle East and North Africa Conference of the Red Crescent and Red Cross National Societies in Amman. In opening remarks, Jordan National Red Crescent Society (JNRCS) President Mohammad Hadid reaffirmed the organization's commitment to supporting those affected by humanitarian crises. He commended the courage of humanitarian workers who risk their lives to aid victims of armed conflicts, emphasizing humanity and mercy that guide actions even in times of conflict. Hadid urged the international community to uphold humanitarian laws, calling for a reduction in violence and improved medical and humanitarian aid for affected civilians. He expressed concern over the loss of moral responsibility and sympathy in conflicts, stressing these values are crucial to respect human dignity. Yassin Abbas, Iraqi Red Crescent Society head and President of the 10th Conference, highlighted worsening human suffering in the region since the last conference in 2018, noting an expansion in affected areas, particularly in the Gaza Strip, where the ongoing conflict has led to unprecedented humanitarian suffering. Eloi Fillion, acting regional director for the Near and Middle East at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said the conference is timely to reaffirm solidarity and commitment to assisting victims of conflicts in the region. Kate Forbes, President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, emphasized the need for continued efforts to alleviate the suffering of millions in the Middle East and North Africa. She also referred to the sacrifices of Red Cross and Red Crescent staff and volunteers, including the loss of 21 members of the Palestine Red Crescent Society in the past 11 months.
