US Interests in Middle East Tied to Control Over Palestine, Says Expert

New York: Prof. Jason Hickel, co-creator of the Global Inequality Project, has shed light on the United States’ longstanding motivations in the Middle East, particularly through its support of Israel. He argues that a liberated Palestine would signal the end of US dominance in the region, impacting its ability to protect Western economic interests.

According to Russia Today, Prof. Hickel discusses how the Gaza crisis illustrates a broader issue within Western liberalism, highlighting a disparity where international laws apply differently to Western nations compared to the global majority. He also points out the environmental degradation in Gaza and criticizes the silence of environmental organizations on the issue. Hickel emphasizes the challenges faced by grassroots environmental movements and the need for institutional reforms, such as empowering the UN Security Council to better represent global interests.

Furthermore, Hickel critiques capitalism as inherently anti-democratic and a root cause of many global issues, including inadequate responses to climate change threats. He contrasts this with China’s significant progress in renewable energy development, attributing it to the high level of trust between the Chinese government and its citizens, unlike in Western countries. Hickel also touches upon the Trump Administration’s policies toward Venezuela, highlighting the detrimental effects of sanctions and the pursuit of regime change.
