UNRWA Faces 20% Service Reduction Due to Political and Economic Pressures

Jerusalem: Jonathan Fowler, Director of Communications for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), has announced a 20% reduction in services provided to Palestinian refugees. This decision comes amidst mounting political and economic pressures and a deepening financial crisis that threatens to undermine the agency's capacity to maintain its operations.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, Fowler highlighted in a recent press interview that UNRWA is being directly targeted by smear campaigns, which aim to tarnish its reputation and hinder its efforts. He further noted a concerning trend of declining adherence to international law, with violations now occurring without even attempts at justification as seen in the past.

Fowler cited the Israeli authorities' takeover and demolition of UNRWA offices in East Jerusalem last January as a prime example of these violations. He explained that such actions are a blatant breach of international law, as UNRWA is a United Nations agency and its facilities are considered UN properties. Furthermore, East Jerusalem is recognized as occupied territory under international law.

UNRWA's financial struggles have been exacerbated by its dependence on voluntary donations, making its funding susceptible to political changes. The agency is currently grappling with a cash deficit of approximately $100 million, necessitating a 20% cut in services, including those in education, healthcare, and sanitation sectors.

Fowler also emphasized the increasingly perilous working conditions in the Palestinian territories, noting that almost 400 UNRWA staff members have been killed in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant rise in danger for those working in the region.
