UN General Assembly Set to Vote on Draft Resolution for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire

New York: The United Nations General Assembly is poised to vote on a draft resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This development follows the Security Council's failure to adopt a ceasefire resolution due to a veto by the United States.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency - WAFA, diplomats anticipate that the 193-member General Assembly will approve the resolution by an overwhelming majority. This is despite significant pressure from Israel on countries deliberating over the draft.

The upcoming vote is part of broader international efforts to address the ongoing conflict and comes ahead of a UN conference scheduled for next week. The conference aims to bolster momentum toward achieving a two-state solution, which remains a focal point of international diplomacy.

The situation arises from last week's events when the United States vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council. The vetoed resolution had demanded the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza, emphasizing safe and unhindered distribution through the United Nations and other humanitarian partners.
