Gaza: UN experts have called on Israel to release Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya and other detained health workers.
According to Palestine News and Information Agency, the experts highlighted that Dr. Abu Safiya's detention without charges exemplifies Israel's targeting of Palestinian health workers and the deterioration of Gaza's healthcare system.
Dr. Abu Safiya was detained on December 27, 2024, at Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last hospital operating in North Gaza. He and others were detained under Israel's Unlawful Combatants' Law, which has been criticized for not aligning with international laws. UN experts had previously expressed concerns about this law and its implications for humanitarian and human rights laws.
The experts noted ongoing violations against civilians and medical personnel under international law. Despite engaging with Israel on these issues since October 2023, they reported continuous violations with no repercussions. They urged Israel to provide Dr. Abu Safiya with necessary medical care due to reports of severe torture and potential life-threatening injuries.
Dr. Abu Safiya is recognized for his critical role in supporting vulnerable populations through his medical work. UN experts condemned Israel's actions against healthcare workers and called for an end to such practices.
