UN Expert Condemns Horrific Israeli Attack on Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza

Gaza: The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Tlaleng Mofokeng, has condemned the Israeli attack on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, the last functioning hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, highlighting the continued challenges in providing health care services in a system already severely compromised by prolonged conflict.

According to Palestine News and Information Agency – WAFA, Mofokeng expressed her horror at the ongoing assaults on hospitals, health care providers, and civilians, which exacerbate the already dire situation in Gaza. She emphasized the devastating impact on the provision of health services, which are now virtually non-existent.

On 13 April 2025, Al-Ahli Hospital was struck by an Israeli airstrike, resulting in the destruction of the emergency department and the tragic death of a child who could not access necessary care. Mofokeng noted that this latest attack has effectively eliminated the remaining options for emergency health care in Gaza, accusing Israel of operating with impunity.

The UN expert drew attention to the daily risks faced by health workers in Gaza, who continue to endure harassment, intimidation, and mortal danger as they strive to save lives. She underscored the necessity of protecting health care facilities and personnel under international law.

The World Health Organization has documented at least 670 health-related attacks between 7 October 2023 and 14 March 2025, affecting 122 health facilities and causing damage to 33 hospitals. Mofokeng described these figures as unacceptable and called for the restoration of dignity and health services for the people of Gaza, who have endured prolonged hardship due to limited access to medical aid and supplies.

Mofokeng urged the international community and world leaders to take decisive action to end the conflict and preserve the lives and dignity of Gaza’s residents, who have suffered for over 18 months. She appealed to their humanity and capacity for action in addressing the ongoing crisis.
